Frequently asked questions

Questions about the construction, material and surface treatment of straight planks

What are EDELHOLZ straight planks made of?

Our wood parquets and straight planks are exclusively made of the best quality oak and ash wood. Be it solid or multilayer straight planks, as raw material we solely use oak – or in same special cases ash.

Where does the raw material of the EDELHOLZ wood straight planks come from?

The EDELHOLZ wood straight planks – like all EDELHOLZ-products – are made of oak and ash of excellent quality, deriving from sustainable, Hungarian state-owned forest managements. Our colleagues personally choose the best wood logs in the forest. Our wood floors are produced according to the strictest quality standards in our plant in Zalalövő.

What kind of substances are used for the surface treatment of straight planks?

Our straight planks and all the other EDELHOLZ-products – including herringbone and chevron parquets, wall coverings, stairs, chateau planks, dining tables, seats – are all treated with the best, high-quality, linseed oil-based, oxidative substances, free of harmful components.

These oils and waxes are all natural and plant-based, containing different minerals. The solid, dried materials mean no harm to people or animals, their quality meets the requirements of children toys as well. About our surface treatments you can read more here.

Why is it important to choose the straight planks with the right product structure?

It had great significancy for us, that our floors can provide a solution in all kind of buildings, as all homes are different and unique. We offer specific plank construction for installation on hot-water based subfloor heating, for installation in historical buildings and new-build homes. Our expert colleagues will be pleased to help you in choosing the ideal product construction.

What is the importance of skirting?

In case of straight planks, the skirting is inevitable because of practical, visual and technical reasons. The number one function of skirting is hiding the expansion gap around the wall. It also provides an aesthetical closing to the floor, optically enlarging the surface of flooring, resulting in better feeling of space. Skirting makes our life easier, as it protects the wall from water stains during cleaning.

Do you offer stair systems in the same colour as straight planks?

Yes, as thanks to our complex stair and flooring systems both steps and skirting can be requested in the same colour and with the same structure as the chosen floor. In case of special, individual concepts, we can adjust the colour of our solid oak wood tables to the straight planks.

Is it easy to clean the wooden straight planks?

It is very easy to clean and care for EDELHOLZ wooden straight planks. But the little, yet precise maintenance will result in a life-long beautiful flooring surface. Our wooden floors can be cleaned dry and also wet. To read more about the exact execution of maintenance, please, click here.

How often do the straight planks require cleaning and care?

Flooring made of straight planks has to be cared for according to its exposure to use. When the colour has visibly lost its original freshness and deepness, there is a need for refreshing it. In general, in restaurants or cafés there is a need for care every 10-12 month, but in usual living areas it can be enough every 4 or 5 years. The process is simple, and if all instructions are kept in mind, it is no challenge. For customers, who wish to execute the refreshment of the flooring by own hands, we have summarized the most important steps and the exact information about the process here.

What is the duration of the warranty for the EDELHOLZ wooden straight planks?

The duration of the warranty for EDELHOLZ straight planks and parquet floors is 25 years for the product structure and 5 years for the surface treatment, on condition of provable and full compliance with the provisions of the installation and care instructions.

Questions regarding underfloor heating and cooling

Is it possible to install straight planks on hot-water based underfloor heating?

Yes, but not all straight plank types and not in any way. We recommend multilayer Triplex planks for installation on underfloor heating, because thanks to its particularly strong and flexible structure (oak in every 3 layers), Triplex is a perfect thermal conductor. This multilayer construction is of great advantage in case of frequent temperature and humidity fluctuations, which is likely in rooms with underfloor heating. About our straight planks installed on hot-water based underfloor heating you can read in this article, and we also suggest reading our installation guide before laying of the floor.

Where is the installation of straight planks not allowed?

It is not allowed to install the straight planks on underfloor heating with cooling function! Our straight plank floors can be laid on electric underfloor heating only on condition of full compliance with the following:

  • heating elements are cast in the screed
  • the temperature of the subfloor is strictly monitored and controlled
  • floating installation of the floor

For more detailed information please, turn to our colleagues.

It is not allowed to install our floor coverings in cellars, bathrooms, around pools in closed areas, in kitchens, and in other wet, damp rooms. High relative air humidity and water can lead to the deformation of the flooring!

Is it possible to lay wooden straight planks on already existing floors, if underfloor heating is already constructed?

Yes, wooden straight planks can be installed in this case too. As cold types of floor coverings (non-wood floors) are bad thermal insulators, the efficiency of the underfloor heating does not change significantly. Due to this and the good thermal conductivity of the straight planks laid on it, the flooring can perfectly fulfil its functions. But the evenness and strength of the already existing covering and the compliance with the installation guide are essential for the long lifespan of the floor. If all requirements are met, we suggest the floating installation of the straight planks on Elastilon. About the installation on Elastilon you can read more here.

Does not the wood insulate the heath of the underfloor heating too much?

All in all, no. Though the wood is good thermal insulator, yet is able to keep the heat very effectively. In the beginning of the heating season, wood floor needs more time to warm up, but once it has reached the optimal temperature, significantly less energy is needed to keep the temperature, as wood acts as a kind of heat storage buffer. The EDELHOLZ multilayer straight planks and parquet floors - in comparison to other products – present the best heat transmission values, as they are made of three, solid oak wood layers. This is why they can be installed effectively and with trust.

Does underfloor heating float dust in the children’s room?

Dust will not float above the floor if the underfloor heating is set correctly, according to the standards. Simply put, we should not specifically feel that the soil under our feet is warm, that is, that the underfloor heating has warmed the wood. To be quite precise: according to the current EU standard, the surface of a heated floor must not be hotter than 28 °C. For an average detached house, the setting is correct if the floor temperature is between 22 and 25 °C. All this is important not only because of the floating dust, but also because the overheated flooring is a great enemy for feet with varicose and joint problems.

Is it allowed to install straight planks on underfloor cooling?

No, the installation of straight planks on underfloor cooling is under no circumstances allowed. Failing to adhere to these leads to exclusion from warranty.

Questions regarding the installation of straight planks

Where is it recommended to get information before the installation of the wooden straight planks?

Before laying the wood straight planks please, read thoroughly the installation guide and if questions arise, please turn to our expert colleagues.

How to install and fix wooden straight planks?

Technically, wooden straight planks can be glued down to the concrete subfloor thanks to a new technology, but floating installation on special Elastilon foil is also possible. Traditional installation on wooden sub-construction is allowed as well. As it is always the circumstances at the place of installation that determine the installation, we suggest you to ask for the advice of our expert colleagues.

It is important to always act according to the installation guide. If you have questions, please turn to our colleagues, who will be pleased to help you.

What is the required quality of subfloor under the wooden straight planks?

We recommend the installation on screed, which is, if possible, minimum C25 or C30. If levelling component is necessary, please consult our colleagues about the type of the substance.

How should the subfloor be prepared, and what is the required layer order and thickness?

The thickness of our products is 14 mm, for some products, 20 mm. For the installation of the 14-mm-thick planks 2 methods are recommended: gluing (in this case, the layer of glue has to be approx. 1,5 mm. The full thickness of the structure is approx. 15,5 mm.) and floating installation (laying on Elastilon – the thickness of the Elastilon is at least 3 mm, so in this case, the full thickness of the structure is 17 mm).

Floating installation or gluing? How to choose?

If the straight planks are to be laid by gluing, the subfloor must be perfect, solid, even, and there must not be cracks in it. Even subfloor of low quality can be improved to the required level with adequate tensile strength and strong structure, but this is expensive.

The basic requirement of installation on Elastilon foil is just the subfloor being even and dry (cracks and weak structure are no obstacle).

Floating installation glued into tongue and groove is not allowed.

It is important to know that herringbone parquet can be installed only by gluing.

Is it possible to install the straight planks on wooden substructure?

Yes, Edelholz-floors can be installed traditionally, on wooden substructure. Please ask for the advice of your constructor/designer about the right layer order. If you have questions, please turn to our expert colleagues, who will be pleased to help you.

Can wooden straight planks be installed on old parquet?

Yes, but only on condition that the old parquet is solid, straight and even. In this case we recommend the floating installation on Elastilon.
