EPD: transparent sustainability from EDELHOLZ

At EDELHOLZ, it is a fundamental principle that our products are manufactured in an environmentally friendly way. This commitment rests on five key pillars:

  1. Sustainably sourced raw materials. Our oak and ash logs are personally selected one by one, sourced exclusively from forests where every tree that is cut down is replaced with a new sapling. While this is guaranteed by the strict forestry regulations in Hungary, we wanted to go even further. That is why we turned to the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC), who conducted an audit recognized by both WWF and Greenpeace. Their certification confirms that all the wood we use comes from fully sustainable sources.
  2. Low carbon footprint. Not only is the wood sourced from Hungary, but our other materials and even our manufacturing equipment come from Europe—often from local Hungarian producers. This allows us to control quality directly and significantly reduce emissions from transportation.
  3. Renewable energy in production. We have installed solar panels on the roofs of our production halls, covering more than half of our energy needs. Wood waste generated during processing is reused as “bio-fuel” to heat our drying chambers. Since we only treat our wood with plant-based oils and waxes, burning this material does not produce harmful or toxic emissions.
  4. Zero waste in practice. In designing our products—furniture, engineered flooring, herringbone parquet, and stairs—we focus on using as much of the harvested wood as possible. Even the smallest oak pieces are used in our layered flooring solutions. What remains (oak scraps, sawdust, wood shavings) is ground down and pressed into briquettes to create a new product. We also collect other materials, such as packaging film, selectively and strive to use as little of them as possible.
  5. Repair and regeneration instead of disposal. We believe that wooden floors are made to last for generations. It’s no coincidence that centuries-old parquet floors can still be found in historic castles. Over time, due to usage or sunlight exposure, the surface of a wooden floor may wear or fade. But in most cases, a simple re-oiling is enough to restore it to its original beauty—no need for sanding or replacement. And when not exposed to extreme conditions, the structure of the floor remains intact over time.

To ensure our efforts actually lead to positive outcomes, we commissioned an independent research institute to carry out a life cycle assessment (LCA) of our flooring products. This study examined the full environmental impact of our floors over their entire life span. The results were summarized and published as an EPD (Environmental Product Declaration).

What is an EPD?
An Environmental Product Declaration (EPD) provides detailed information about a product’s environmental impacts throughout its life cycle. It offers objective, transparent, and verified data on resource use, energy consumption, greenhouse gas emissions, and waste management. EPDs are independently verified by third parties and serve as valuable tools not only for manufacturers, but also for buyers, designers, and stakeholders who wish to make responsible, environmentally conscious purchasing decisions.

EDELHOLZ’s EPD is freely accessible and can be downloaded from the website of the publishing organization, the Finnish Rakennustieto:
