Myths and Facts About Underfloor Heating

Even today, many people still believe the myth that underfloor heating is unhealthy because it stirs up dust.

This claim may have had some validity in the early days of underfloor heating systems, when homes lacked proper insulation in their floors and walls, and windows and doors did not meet modern technical and insulation standards. To compensate for poor insulation, many people would turn the heating up too high. As a result, the strong airflow from the heated air visibly and measurably stirred up fine dust particles.

Today, in well-insulated homes, the water circulated in underfloor heating systems is typically around 32–35 °C, which translates to a floor surface temperature of about 24–26°C. At this temperature, the movement of warm air is minimal or nonexistent, so there is no dust-stirring effect—and this low-temperature heating method also doesn’t overly dry out the air. Furthermore, unlike radiators, underfloor heating does not cause discoloration on the walls due to air movement, as shown in the image above...

How to Use Underfloor Heating Properly

Running underfloor heating at low temperatures is not only important to prevent air movement, but also for health reasons.

According to the German DIN standard, the maximum allowable floor surface temperature is 28 °C, while the Swiss standard permits up to 27°C. These limits are set to protect veins and joints in the feet, meaning that overheating the floor is explicitly discouraged for health reasons. Overly dry air with very low humidity is also harmful to our bodies—and can lead to floor deformation.

Natural and Healthy Underfloor Heating with Our Wooden Floors

When it comes to underfloor heating, it’s important to highlight that thanks to EDELHOLZ’s natural, plant-based oil surface treatments, our herringbone / chevron parquet and straight plank wood floors release no harmful substances. Our test results are excellent: our wood floors emit zero VOCs (volatile organic compounds, which can be harmful to health).

Moreover, wood flooring naturally has a warm surface, so in the autumn and spring months, you can comfortably walk on it barefoot—without even needing to turn on the underfloor heating. And children can safely play on the floor.

Efficient and Healthy Heating Combined with the Beauty of Wood Floors

We can confidently say that in modern, well-insulated buildings, the previous drawbacks of underfloor heating no longer apply. Underfloor heating now operates much more efficiently and, with proper settings, not only saves money but also protects the health of you and your family.
